IPTV Germany: A German IPTV Guide for English Speakers
IPTV in Germany works the same way as anywhere else: you install a player app on your smart TV, Fire TV Stick or phone, enter the login from your IPTV provider, and watch live TV, films and series over your internet connection. What is specific to Germany is the paperwork around it: every household pays a broadcasting fee of €18.36 a month, and many rental flats lost their included cable TV in 2024.
Note: SmartTV.one is an IPTV provider, and we promote our own service on this page. Facts as of 22 October 2026, from rundfunkbeitrag.de, the University of Mannheim Welcome Center and the Hamburg consumer advice centre (in German).
How TV works in Germany
Germans watch TV in four ways: cable, satellite, antenna (DVB-T2 HD) and the internet. For decades, cable came with many rental flats, billed through the service charges. That ended on 1 July 2024: landlords may no longer pass cable fees on to all tenants, so each household now chooses for itself. If your flat has a cable socket but no contract, the connection is usually blocked.
- Satellite needs a dish and your landlord’s permission; the main channels are free to receive.
- Antenna (DVB-T2 HD) is free for public channels; private channels in HD cost extra.
- Internet TV needs no dish, no antenna and no receiver: it runs as an app.
Our German guide Fernsehen ohne Kabel compares all options with their costs.
The broadcasting fee: what every household pays
Germany funds its public broadcasters through the Rundfunkbeitrag. It is €18.36 a month per household, and it applies whether you have a TV or not, and however you watch. It is not a fee for IPTV and an IPTV subscription does not replace it.
You do not have to apply for it yourself in most cases. After you register your address at the local citizens‘ office, the Beitragsservice sends you a letter. One person pays for the whole household, so in a shared flat the fee is paid once. According to the University of Mannheim, people who stay less than three months and do not register an address do not pay.
What you need for IPTV in Germany
- An internet connection with at least 10 Mbit/s per stream for HD (15 Mbit/s recommended) and 25 Mbit/s for 4K. A cable to the router is more stable than Wi-Fi. Details in IPTV Internetgeschwindigkeit (German).
- A device: a smart TV with a suitable app, a Fire TV Stick, an Android TV or Google TV device, a phone, a tablet or a computer.
- A player app such as TiviMate, IPTV Smarters Pro, IBO Player or Hot Player. The app plays your playlist; it contains no channels.
- A login from your provider, either an M3U link or Xtream Codes (server address, username, password).
Setting it up on your device
On a Fire TV Stick or Android TV, most people use TiviMate or IPTV Smarters Pro. On Samsung and LG smart TVs, the app has to come from the TV’s own store, which limits the choice. Our step-by-step guides are in German but follow the screens one by one: TiviMate, IPTV Smarters Pro, Hot Player, Samsung and LG. Menu names on your TV stay in the language you set on the device.
Is IPTV legal in Germany?
IPTV is simply TV delivered over the internet, and the technology is legal; large German network operators use it for their own TV packages. What matters is whether a provider holds the rights to the channels it streams. Under German law, users of clearly unlicensed sources can also be held liable, for example when a very low price for a very large number of channels suggests the service is not licensed. Our legal overview (in German) summarises the sources and the situation in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
What to check before you buy IPTV
